Join the Commonwealth of Virginia team as a Family Services Specialist I, a critical role in providing support to vulnerable populations.

Job Summary:

This entry-level position involves working under close supervision to develop skills in program areas such as Adult/Adult Protective Services, Child Protective Services, Foster Care/Adoption, Child Care, and Employment Services. The Family Services Specialist I will perform routine-to-journey-level casework activities, with case actions reviewed by a supervisor prior to implementation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interpret laws, policies, and regulations related to specific areas of responsibility.
  • Monitor, coordinate, and administer specific programs as assigned.
  • Coordinate services within specific areas of responsibility.
  • Interview and assess customer needs, education/skill levels, abilities, interests, and support systems.
  • Inform clients of related service programs, rules/regulations, and their right to participate.
  • Present cases to determine appropriate services and write/implement service plans.
  • Provide case management services to monitor compliance.
  • Manage program waiting lists.
  • Track expenditures, prepare/submits budget estimates, and ensure payment for services.
  • Complete necessary federal, state, and local planning and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with other agencies and participate in multi-disciplinary and interagency teams providing services to customers.
  • Conduct overall monitoring of programs in specific areas of responsibility.
  • Serve as a resource to clients and the community in areas of expertise.
  • Provide after-hours on-call coverage and respond to emergencies in child/adult protective services and/or foster care.
Requirements:

A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or a Bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area as mandated in Section 22VAC of the Administrative Code of Virginia and implemented by the Virginia Board of Social Services. Possession of a BSW or MSW degree and a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license are desirable.

Preferred qualifications include current or prior experience as a Family Services Specialist.

Special Requirements:

Applicants may be subject to a Criminal History Background search, Central Registry search, DMV driving record check, and/or pre-employment drug screen. The investigation may include fingerprint checks (State Police, FBI), local agency checks, employment verification and references, verification of education (relevant to employment), credit checks (relevant to employment), and other checks requested by the hiring authority.

All offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory results of the required checks and screenings.

The employee must be willing to work in a community emergency shelter in the event of a disaster or emergency.
