Patient Care Technician

Purpose and Scope:
As a key member of the hemodialysis healthcare team, you will provide safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Your responsibilities will include setting up and operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean working environment, and supporting the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI Activities.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Staff Related:
- Participate in the recruitment process for new clinical staff.
- Assist with clinical orientation and ongoing training of direct patient care personnel.
- Function as a preceptor in direct patient care training programs.
- Deliver and maintain ongoing competency evaluations/audits.
- Collaborate with the Clinical Manager and Education Coordinator in driving FMS quality standards.
- Education/Communication:
- Partner with RN and IDT staff to educate personnel regarding facility water systems and environmental integrity.
- Ensure a strong communication process between clinical staff and support staff.
- Participate in implementing creative educational programs for PCT staff.
- Patient Related:
- Assist in providing patient-specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures.
- Perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and administration of Heparin as delegated.
- Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders.
- Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy.
- Infection Control Specialization:
- Assist with facility QAI infection control audits.
- Act as a change agent for infection control practices within the clinic.
- Reinforce patient and staff adherence to infection control policies and procedures.
- Maintenance/Technical:
- Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics.
- Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surfaces and equipment.
- Conduct pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing.
- Initiate Solution Delivery System (SDS) system.
- Record Keeping:
- Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
- Enter treatment data into the designated clinical application.
- Review treatment sheets for completeness and accuracy.
