Position Summary:
The Financial Aid team comprises various counselor roles at different levels. The current openings are based at the Stockton campus and may involve program management across multiple campus locations. The responsibilities of the counselors vary based on the university's needs and the experience of the individuals. Counselors are expected to comprehend and uphold the mission and objectives of the department, division, and institution. They are tasked with providing effective and compliant administrative support for various federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs, including scholarships, grants, loans, and employment opportunities.
The Counselor III is anticipated to engage positively and collegially with all members of the financial aid team. This role also requires effective collaboration and representation of the office when interacting with cross-functional teams within the university that partner with the financial aid operation to manage its programs.
As a vital member of the financial aid team, the Counselor III is responsible for fostering a professional, service-oriented environment that administers a comprehensive range of financial aid programs, ensuring exceptional customer service is delivered to students, parents, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver outstanding service to students, parents, and colleagues.
- Continuously enhance knowledge of Title IV, state, and institutional regulations and policies to fulfill position responsibilities.
- Implement policies and procedures when managing student files and program processing.
- Make informed independent decisions regarding financial aid eligibility for students.
- Effectively manage multiple tasks and adapt focus as required by departmental deadlines and service needs.
- Coordinate efforts with colleagues within the department and across the university.
- Maintain a high volume of work while minimizing errors.
- Provide expert advising for students and parents through various communication channels.
- Process financial aid documentation with discretion and independent judgment regarding appeals, verification, and eligibility for federal, state, and institutional programs.
- Support and guide compliance with regulations, funds management, and reconciliation.
- Draft policies and procedures for management review and approval.
- Train and mentor Financial Aid Counselor I and II positions.
- Assist in supervising Federal Work Study employees.
- Collaborate with student accounts and other offices to verify financial aid data.
- Facilitate the processing of state grants, Federal Pell Grants, and Federal Direct Loans for various student categories.
- Manage payroll loads for student employment programs.
- Assist in administering the university's merit scholarship programs.
- Oversee the awarding of endowed scholarships.
- Review reports, analyze enrollment status, and identify necessary aid adjustments.
- Oversee one or more financial aid programs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree (Two years of full-time experience in a similar role is equivalent to one year of post-secondary education).
- Two years of relevant financial aid experience.
- In-depth knowledge of regulations governing federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs.
- Ability to apply professional judgment in determining appropriate financial aid offers.
- Skill in resolving conflicts in complex situations.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Capacity to build effective working relationships with the financial aid team and external partners.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage concurrent deadlines.
- Experience in promoting social justice, equity, and inclusion within a university context.
Extended periods of sitting and repetitive motion while using a computer. Occasional standing, walking, and lifting up to twenty-five pounds may be required.
Work Environment:
Work is typically performed during standard business hours, with occasional evenings and weekends required. Local and national travel may be necessary.
Compensation:
$66,000 - $71,303.00 annually, based on qualifications and experience.
