Role Summary
This position provides essential support to the histology and surgical pathology laboratory, focusing on entry-level histology tasks related to specimen processing and the routine preparation of surgical and autopsy microscopic slides.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assists in histology laboratory operations utilizing both automated and manual techniques to stain and coverslip microscopic slides.
2. Labels slides accurately, collates with necessary documentation, and submits to the designated pathologist or resident, ensuring all tracking information is documented appropriately.
3. Reviews protocol files for Gross Only specimens and outstanding paperwork, monitoring logs to confirm that all routine H&E slides are submitted in a timely manner.
4. Executes and records basic embedding procedures for routine surgical and autopsy tissues.
5. Conducts routine paraffin block reconciliation, prioritizing blocks according to established guidelines.
6. Maintains accurate and legible documentation, managing both manual and electronic records for efficient data retrieval.
7. Addresses routine inquiries regarding blocks, slides, and case statuses, directing technical questions to the appropriate laboratory personnel.
Equipment and Safety:
Practices proficient and safe usage of all necessary equipment to fulfill duties within defined turnaround times, including tissue processors, embedding centers, automated stainers, and cover slippers. Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and documenting routine instrument maintenance as per standard operating procedures (SOP), reporting any equipment malfunctions as needed.
Work Environment:
Maintains a clean and safe workspace to ensure efficient workflow and compliance with all regulatory requirements, including routine cleaning and disinfecting of laboratory areas. Monitors laboratory inventory in the histology area, promptly notifying the coordinator of any supply shortages.
Team Collaboration:
Encourages teamwork within the department and laboratory through effective communication. Participates in safety and infection control initiatives and assists in the orientation and training of new staff in the histology area.
Professional Development:
Takes initiative for personal growth by engaging in educational sessions, teleconferences, and required meetings. Performs additional duties as assigned.
