Job Summary:

The Electrical Foreman is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of electrical systems in the facilities owned or operated by Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. This includes ensuring the safe condition of lighting fixtures, electrical distribution systems, wiring, fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, generators, and all electrical elements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assumes primary responsibility for the safe condition of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Determines which repair jobs may be performed by electricians, custodians, and maintenance workers on the staff and which must be performed by outside contracts.
  • Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provides access for future maintenance, and avoids unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring.
  • Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints.
  • Connects power cables to equipment and installs grounding leads.
  • Tests continuity of circuit to insure electrical capability and safety of components.
  • Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustment, relocation, or replacement.
  • Maintains tools and equipment and keeps supplies and parts in order.
  • Installs power supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment.
  • Disassembles and diagnoses malfunctioning apparatus, such as transformers, motors, and lighting fixtures.
  • Supervises and coordinates activities of electricians engaged in maintenance and repair of electric power, lighting, security, and communication systems of buildings.
  • Plans wiring and installation of equipment and fixtures, such as motors, generators, switches, circuit breakers, and fuse boxes.
  • Recommends supplies and equipment for purchase, and maintains the inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Estimates costs of electrical repair projects in terms of labor, material, and overhead.
  • Follows the National Electric Code and complies with state and local building codes when installing systems.
  • Responds to emergencies as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

  • Valid Electrical Contractors NC License (required)
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License.
  • Five years successful experience as an electrician preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of building codes.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.


Terms of Employment:

Twelve-month year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel.
