Job Overview


The Local Specialty Pharmacist is responsible for managing the daily functions of the pharmacy department, ensuring effective workflow, clinical oversight of patients, and adherence to quality improvement standards. This role involves compliance with both internal and external regulatory requirements, as well as managing pharmacy sales, expenses, and inventory control while delivering exceptional customer service to patients, healthcare providers, and partners.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service Excellence

Ensures that pharmacy staff deliver welcoming service and accurate information, maintaining a friendly and efficient environment.

Addresses customer inquiries and resolves complaints, striving to enhance the overall reputation of the pharmacy department.

Operational Management

Oversees the daily operations of the pharmacy department.


Enhances prescription volume, pharmacy sales, and profitability through precise prescription filling and superior customer service to patients, prescribers, pharmaceutical companies, payers, and healthcare systems.


Immediately reports any prescription errors and adheres to company policies regarding incident management and quality improvement.


Ensures compliance with all relevant federal and state regulations, maintaining necessary records and documentation.

Implements asset protection strategies to minimize financial losses.


Maintains cleanliness and organization within the pharmacy department, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.


Manages the store's financial transactions, including cash handling and daily cash reporting.

Ensures the proper functioning and upkeep of pharmacy systems and equipment.


Stays informed about third-party pharmacy opportunities and ensures the effective administration of related systems to reduce payment rejections.

Resolves issues with third-party claims promptly and resubmits claims as necessary.

Inventory Management

Controls and manages the inventory of the Prescription Department, following company purchasing protocols and sourcing products from appropriate suppliers.

Team Leadership and Development

Supervises pharmacy team members to ensure compliance with company policies and effective performance of their duties. Verifies that all pharmacy personnel hold the necessary licenses.

Regularly reviews training needs for pharmacy staff regarding payer and pharmaceutical contractual obligations.

Reinforces the importance of ethical prescription dispensing among pharmacy personnel.

Professional Development

Conducts self-assessments and sets personal performance objectives.


Stays updated on advancements in pharmacy, healthcare, and retail management that relate to job responsibilities, integrating new knowledge into practice.

Collaboration and Communication

Fosters strong working relationships with physicians and other healthcare professionals, collaborating effectively with the Local Specialty Pharmacy team.

External Basic Qualifications:
BS in Pharmacy or Pharm D Degree from an accredited institution.

Current pharmacist license in the relevant states (or willingness to obtain within one year).


A minimum of one year of pharmacy experience, including prescription processing, compliance, and pharmacy operations.

Experience in prescription dispensing with a strong understanding of state and federal controlled substance regulations.


Completion of specialized training related to medication management or sufficient practical experience in specialized services offered at clinic locations.


Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience at a Walgreens Local Specialty Pharmacy.


Achieved an overall score of Exceeds Expectations in the most recent performance review.
