Job Description

Transformers are the backbone of modern electrical systems, and the Coil Winder plays a crucial role in their creation. As a Coil Winder, you will be responsible for winding transformers in a workshop environment, ensuring that each coil meets the highest standards of quality and precision.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Wind various types of liquid and dry transformers using specialized equipment and techniques.
  • Operate wire-coiling machines to wind wire or sheet coils with precision and accuracy.
  • Review work orders and specifications to determine necessary materials and ensure compliance with industry standards.
  • Read and interpret winding data sheets and drawings to ensure accurate coil construction.
  • Operate winding lathes, punches, and shears to cut, strip, and bend wire leads as needed.
  • Select and load materials onto equipment, ensuring efficient and safe operation.
  • Record production and operational data accurately on specified forms to track progress and identify areas for improvement.
  • Identify and report quality concerns to a supervisor, ensuring that all coils meet the highest standards of quality and safety.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to good housekeeping practices and safety protocols.
  • Inspect electro-mechanical equipment for damage or electrical malfunctions, taking prompt action to address any issues.
  • Use hand tools to attach, alter, and trim materials, ensuring precise and accurate results.
  • Use an overhead crane to load and unload materials from machines, demonstrating safe and efficient operation.
  • Dismantle or strip damaged or unserviceable electro-mechanical equipment, following established procedures and protocols.
  • Prepare reusable parts for rewinding and inspect renewed parts for hidden damage or unusual conditions.
  • Use proper insulating techniques during rewinding to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Operate brazing and welding equipment to make brazed connections, fabricate crossovers, and burn leads, adhering to safety protocols and industry standards.
  • Complete required paperwork accurately and on time for each job, ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Operate specialized repair and testing equipment, including winding machines, insulation resistance testers, cut-off saws, bake ovens, grinders, cranes, forklifts, brazing units, dip tanks, VPI systems, and various hand-held tools, demonstrating proficiency and safety.
  • Follow all safety procedures and policies, using proper protective equipment (especially eye and ear protection, steel toe shoes/boots, gloves, etc.) to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Report all injuries, near misses, and accidents immediately to a supervisor, adhering to company policies and procedures.
  • Perform electrical testing, record connection and winding data on QA forms, order materials, wind random coils, insert finished coils, connect coils, test, tape, and tie finished coils, and prepare for installation, demonstrating attention to detail and quality.
  • Perform tasks as directed based on departmental needs, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
Measures of Success:
  • Department efficiency, including low rework and warranty costs, manpower utilization, and work completed within estimated hours.
  • Customer satisfaction and meeting or exceeding customer expectations.
  • On-time completion of projects.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma required.
  • In-depth knowledge of transformer coil winding.
  • Experience in transformers and transformer coil winding is necessary.
  • Hard-working, detail-oriented individual capable of directing personnel positively with effective oral and written communication skills.
  • If duties involve operating a motor vehicle, must pass a motor vehicle record check.
