Relief Veterinarian for Community Care

Miami, United States American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Full time
Overview:

Have you ever considered the fate of pets whose owners struggle to afford veterinary services? At the ASPCA, our Community Medicine (CM) team is dedicated to delivering professional veterinary care to enhance the welfare of animals and their guardians through our mobile and stationary clinics, focusing on the most underserved populations. We strive to eliminate barriers to care, providing quality services directly to communities in need, often subsidizing the costs of essential and preventive treatments. CM treats both pets and their owners with dignity and respect, empowering them to make informed choices regarding their pets' health and wellbeing, irrespective of their financial situations. Joining the ASPCA means becoming part of a passionate team of over 1,000 professionals committed to animal welfare.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist animals in need. Our proficient veterinarians, supported by licensed technicians and assistants, deliver vital services to pets and rescue animals requiring our assistance. The CM team attends to over 100,000 animals annually, with many more awaiting help. There is no need for clients to worry about service costs, as the ASPCA offers services to eligible clients at minimal or no expense. The CM program provides high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN), preventive care, and treatment for minor ailments and injuries. Experienced HQHVSN surgeons can select between surgical days or days focused on preventive and basic care, known as Primary Pet Care (PPC). Those with small animal experience but lacking HQHVSN skills may choose PPC shifts. All services are conducted at our stationary clinic.

Work Schedule:

This is a temporary, contingent role, with employment through a third-party staffing agency. Relief/fill-in is available Monday through Friday, with hours from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM (HQHVSN) or 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (PPC).

Compensation:

This temporary (per diem) position offers $880 for each 8-hour shift, with potential modifications in the future.

Responsibilities Include:

Medical Duties (70%):
  • Deliver compassionate, high-quality preventive and basic care to patients, managing all aspects of veterinary care during clinic operations, including physical examinations, diagnostics, treatment recommendations, and medication prescriptions.
  • Conduct pre-surgery physical assessments on all surgical candidates.
  • Perform 30-40 high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgical procedures each clinic day.
  • Diagnose and manage post-surgical medical complications.
  • Oversee all minor outpatient surgical procedures.
  • Ensure a safe and compassionate environment for animals, staff, and clients by employing low-stress handling techniques.
  • Triage and refer cases that do not meet CM's care parameters as necessary.
  • Administer humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policies and CM protocols.
Client Interaction (30%):
  • Engage with clients in a non-judgmental, effective, and professional manner; discuss examination and test results to enable pet owners to make informed decisions regarding their pets' care.
  • Provide guidance to owners on end-of-life and other sensitive medical issues.
  • Offer discharge instructions for patients and supervise the dispensing of medications.
