Job Responsibilities

As a Practical Nursing Specialist, you will deliver comprehensive nursing care based on established protocols and the nursing process, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Your role will involve:

  • Conducting health assessments and managing medication administration while providing essential first aid and basic life support to both patients and staff.
  • Maintaining effective communication with security and treatment personnel, contributing valuable insights to aid in the development of treatment strategies.
  • Documenting all relevant patient information accurately in medical records and collaborating with various departments as necessary.
  • Engaging in ongoing professional development through education and certification, with a focus on the unique aspects of correctional nursing.
  • Demonstrating flexibility in work hours, locations, and responsibilities to meet the operational needs of the facility.
  • Understanding that this position is limited to a specific number of working hours annually, with restrictions on weekly work hours.

Essential Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
  • Possession of a valid and unrestricted Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license in Virginia or a multi-state compact license.
  • Knowledge of nursing principles and practices, with the ability to assess and address patient needs effectively.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate documentation and executing medical orders.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers from a recognized organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a correctional or law enforcement healthcare setting.
  • Training or experience in general nursing and emergency medical response.
