Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Electrical Maintenance Specialist to join our team at Kanawha County Public Schools. As a Substitute Electrician, you will be responsible for rebuilding, repairing, maintaining, and installing all electrical service and distribution equipment, as well as maintaining electric motors for batteries, tools, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in providing general maintenance duties as requested by the supervisor.
  • Repair and replace motors for boiler pumps, air compressors, well pumps, sump pumps, exhaust fans, electric hammers, wood and metal lathes, drills, purge pans, and others.
  • Assist in maintaining preventive maintenance records.
  • Perform related electrical shop work interfacing with refrigeration, electronics, heating/air conditioning mechanics.
  • May work on site as needed for particular equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
  • Maintain time, materials, and records of jobs.
  • Maintain and replace all distribution and branch circuits throughout Kanawha County Schools.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly work area.
  • Comply with KCS policies.
  • Complete necessary training and in-service as required by KCS.
  • Receive permission from building principal/supervisor to work in excess of 40 hours per week.
  • Attend in-services and workshops as directed.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations and use prescribed personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Continuously improve processes.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Criminal background check conducted.
  • Meet the definition of Qualifications in WV Code §18A-4-8b.
  • Demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test) as required.
  • Technician certification through the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET).
  • Training through an approved apprenticeship program or comparable experience/training, plus two years experience as a journeyman electrician.
Requirements
  • Must be able to use various electrical testing and calibrating equipment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency through previous job experience and/or training in related field.
  • Possess and maintain a valid West Virginia driver's license.
  • Ability to write reports and complete work orders consistently with the duties of this position.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, and general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, divide, multiply in all units of measure consistent with the duties of this position.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations consistent with the duties of this position.
  • Ability to interface effectively with other departments, school personnel, maintenance staff, business contacts, and contractors from outside the county.
  • Ability to work on ladders and assemble scaffolds.
  • Ability to operate and maintain motorized lifts.
  • Ability to work proficiently with computer programs dealing with electrical systems.
  • Ability to obtain food workers' permit.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to accurately perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to perform duties in full compliance with the county requirements and the Board of Education policies.
Work Environment

The work environment includes indoor as well as outdoor settings and can range in temperature from below freezing to 90°F. The work surface can include unfinished crawl spaces and attics as well as roof tops, walking freezers, and concrete floors or pads. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud dB.
