Job Summary

The Certified Athletic Trainer is responsible for coordinating and administering a comprehensive health care program for all student athletes. This includes immediate care of injured athletes, implementing techniques and strategies to encourage the prevention of athletic injuries and illnesses, and providing for recognition, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of injuries to student athletes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develops a plan for emergency health care of injured athletes
  • Provides evaluation and treatment to injured athletes
  • Initiates and processes all injury reports
  • Maintains first aid supplies and ensures they are in their proper location for use
  • Renders on-site decisions, in the absence of a physician, on the playing status of a player
  • Counsels the coaches when an athlete may participate in practice or games following injury or illness
  • Counsels athletes in seeking proper medical assistance for follow-up care
  • Maintains accurate medical records for all athletes
  • Advises coaches and coordinates the efforts of doctors, athletes, and parents
  • Establishes injury prevention practices
Requirements
  • Must be certified through Board of Certification (BOC) and maintain that association's standards
  • Must be licensed by the Virginia Board of Medicine as an Athletic Trainer
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, administrators, and medical personnel
  • Must be certified in CPR
Physical Requirements

The Certified Athletic Trainer must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment is also required. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions will be required.
