NATURE OF WORK: This role involves providing essential support to educators in the instruction of students with special needs. The assistant may engage in one-on-one interactions with students requiring additional assistance, necessitating specific skills and training to address their unique physical and educational needs. A variety of responsibilities are undertaken to facilitate the teaching-learning process, all performed under the guidance of the supervising teacher and principal.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Academic Support Conducts group instruction as directed by the teacher. Offers personalized instruction to students. Demonstrates various educational activities. Monitors assignments given by the teacher. Reviews and corrects student work during lessons. Ensures students remain focused on tasks. Recognizes and praises student achievements. Communicates student progress to the teacher. Instructional Preparation and Support Acts as a substitute teacher when necessary. Organizes classroom layout and resources. Creates visual aids to enhance learning. Prepares and duplicates instructional materials. Reorganizes classroom materials at day's end. Supervises testing environments. Participates in professional development workshops. Assesses student work as per teacher instructions. Distributes and collects educational resources. Reporting and Record Keeping Monitors and reports student attendance. Inputs data into health records. Documents student behavior. Organizes records in compliance with regulations. Instructs on citizenship, social skills, and respect. Mediates minor conflicts among students. Contributes to the development of discipline policies. Implements approved disciplinary methods. Reports behavioral issues to the teacher or principal. Communicates significant changes in student behavior to supervisors.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Additional Duties may be assigned.
Familiarity with effective child management techniques. Understanding of core subjects relevant to the assigned grade level. Awareness of school organization and community context. Knowledge of typical child behavior and developmental stages. Proficiency in operating audiovisual equipment and office machinery. Ability to create educational aids that support lesson plans. Comprehension of teacher-designed strategies aimed at achieving instructional goals. Capability to identify significant student behaviors and report them appropriately. Skill in conveying information at a level appropriate for children. Ability to apply recognition and disciplinary methods fairly and consistently. Competence in independently resolving minor issues. Ability to follow detailed instructions with minimal supervision. Accuracy in recording and managing data. Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of student information.COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Proficient in reading and interpreting documents such as safety guidelines and procedural manuals. Capable of composing routine reports related to job responsibilities. Effective in presenting information and addressing inquiries from staff and the public.REASONING ABILITY:
Skilled in solving practical problems and managing various concrete variables. Ability to interpret diverse instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or listen. Frequent walking and use of hands are necessary. Occasionally, the employee must stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific visual abilities required include close vision and depth perception. The employee may lift up to 50 lbs. for tasks such as handling files and materials.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The characteristics of the work environment typically involve moderate to loud noise levels. Continuous interaction with the public and staff is a key aspect of this role.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
2 or 4 year degree in any field OR Completion of 96 Community College/University contact hours and satisfactory scores on placement tests in reading, writing, and math.This description serves to outline the general nature and level of work associated with this position.
