Role Overview
Mott MacDonald North America is recognized as the consultant of choice for a diverse range of power clients. We provide leading engineering services in power delivery, including transmission planning, detailed design, and owner's engineering. We are seeking a Principal Engineer for Transmission Planning Studies to join our System Studies team. This team focuses on projects related to renewable generation for developers and transmission planning studies for utility companies.

Key Responsibilities
As a Principal Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing engineering expertise and guidance in identifying, analyzing, and resolving complex technical challenges.
  • Conducting load flow, short circuit, stability, and transient studies for renewable developers and utilities.
  • Preparing comprehensive and precise technical reports, documentation, and calculations.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Reviewing the work of peers to ensure adherence to scope and quality assurance requirements.
  • Mentoring and guiding junior engineers within the team.
  • Effectively planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, coordinating, and monitoring work with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Making informed decisions regarding engineering complexities and methodologies.
  • Continuously improving job-related engineering knowledge, skills, and performance.

Qualifications
We invite applications from candidates with the following qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience in designing utility high voltage power systems, transmission planning, or a related field within the consulting or utility sector.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Extensive knowledge of electric power system network analysis and transmission planning techniques.
  • Proficiency in performing load flow, short circuit, and transient stability studies using software such as PSS/E, PSLF, ASPEN, and TARA.
  • Familiarity with NERC and Transmission Planner/Planning Coordinator reliability standards.
  • Expertise in applying IEEE and IEC standards in the design and study of transmission and generation facilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Willingness to travel for stakeholder meetings and conferences.
  • Master's degree or higher in Electrical Power Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Experience in stakeholder and industry committee participation.
  • Experience in electromagnetic transient analysis (PSCAD/EMTDC, ATP, EMTP-RV).
  • Experience in dynamic model tuning and development using PSS/E and PSCAD.
  • Experience in writing equipment specifications and conducting harmonic and GIC analysis.
  • Knowledge of Python and EPCL programming.

Work Environment
This position has the potential for remote work depending on the candidate's qualifications and may also be based in various energy offices.
