Brockton Hospital is seeking a skilled Operating Room Surgical Technician to join our team in a Part Time Flex role. As a key member of our surgical team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our operating rooms and providing exceptional patient care.
Key Responsibilities- Exercise aseptic technique in preparation for and during surgery, adhering to all regulatory requirements.
- Assist with the preparation of the operating room, setting up surgical suites with equipment and instruments, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
- Assist with the preservation and labeling of operative specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Assist with the care, cleaning, storage, and inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Maintain an orderly and clean work area, and maintain appropriate stock levels.
- Assist with the transportation of preoperative patients to the operating room.
- Assist with the sterilization of instruments and equipment, and the movement or manipulation of special large equipment.
- Anticipate the surgeon's needs and place appropriate instruments, sponges, sutures, and related materials and supplies at the field immediately available for use during the progress of surgery.
- Control the location of contaminated instruments and supplies to prevent the spread of infection.
- Perform surgical scrubs and shaves to assigned preoperative patients.
- Label medications transferred to the sterile field from the registered nurse, and deliver medication to the surgeon for administration.
- Continuously strive to improve room turnovers, anticipating needs for next cases.
- Care for all OR equipment, returning equipment to proper locations, and assisting in the removal of malfunctioning equipment with the malfunction clearly identified.
- Care for instrumentation, protecting delicate instrumentation, clearly identifying instrumentation needing repair and removing it from service, and clearly labeling and identifying equipment problems.
- Ensure that sub-sterile areas are clear of all equipment at the end of the shift.
- Perform accurate instrument, sponge, and needle counts.
- Contribute to preference card updates and facilitate communication from surgeons to appropriate resources.
- Prepare for OR cases by assembling appropriate supplies completely and accurately, and independently follow up on additional needs.
- Independently research procedures, equipment, and policies to maintain current practice.
- Promptly sign off on staff meetings, communication book entries, policy changes, OR educational modules, and other educational resources.
- Confirm daily sterilizer Quality Assurance in the absence of equipment technician.
- Consistently assist other staff when not in a case.
- Carefully dispose of sharps in appropriate containers before case counts leave the room.
- Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
- Commit to recognizing and respecting cultural diversity for all customers (internal and external).
- Communicate effectively with internal and external customers with respect for differences in cultures, values, beliefs, and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of an Accredited Surgical Technologist program required.
- Minimum of 1-year experience preferred, will consider a beginning practitioner.
- On-call responsibility with a 30-minute response time to the hospital.
- New graduates must obtain certification within 12 months of graduation date.
- Current BLS certification required.
- Current Surgical Technologist Certification required.
