About SpaceX:
SpaceX was established with the vision that a future where humanity explores the cosmos is far more thrilling than one where we remain confined to Earth.
Currently, SpaceX is advancing the technologies necessary to make this vision a reality, with the ultimate aim of facilitating human life on Mars.
Position Overview:
The Build Reliability team at SpaceX is a diverse, cross-functional group dedicated to ensuring the reliability of flight components and production assemblies.
As a Reliability Engineering Specialist, you will gain extensive exposure by collaborating with various core teams at SpaceX, overseeing the hardware from its design phase through to production and operational stages.
Your role will involve utilizing data to comprehend the elements that influence reliability, supporting quality objectives within design and development teams to enhance reliability in manufacturing, testing, and flight.
You will have the capability to delve into intricate details to identify, comprehend, and resolve challenging technical issues while employing a system-level perspective to prioritize concerns for the overall vehicle.
In this hands-on role, you will engage in activities both in the office and on the factory floor, as well as in the laboratory, to fulfill the mission of making humanity interplanetary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as a collaborative partner with design engineering and manufacturing teams throughout product development and production, formulating quality plans for flight hardware. This includes identifying key characteristics, conducting prototype testing for functionality and manufacturability, planning first article and detailed inspections, and considering past failures and lessons learned.
- Develop, implement, and validate Lean testing and inspection processes for both new and existing products and processes, ensuring that criteria are objective and that quality goals are consistently achieved.
- Monitor product and process success during production ramp-up using a suite of quality and analytical tools.
- Conduct regular build quality reviews to ensure design intent is met and effectively communicated; identify opportunities for risk mitigation and simplification in designs and processes to enhance manufacturability, collaborating with integrated product teams to drive improvements and address significant and recurring non-conformances.
- Investigate production, testing, and flight failures, identifying and addressing both immediate and underlying root causes to reduce risk and enhance design and process reliability.
- Manage suspect or known non-conforming products, providing guidance to quality inspectors, technicians, shop supervisors, and engineers to assist in quarantine and rework activities.
- Support continuous improvement on the shop floor and advance a Lean, autonomous production system by creating standard rework/repair guides, eliminating redundant inspections, and optimizing critical processes.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, or another STEM-related field.
- Minimum of 1 year in a manufacturing, quality, and/or design engineering role (student project team or internship experience qualifies).
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with a passion for innovation and a commitment to enhancing reliability in advanced technology.
- Master's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials engineering, or electrical engineering.
- Demonstrated experience with process controls in high-volume manufacturing, testing, and quality environments.
- Dedication to a Lean approach to quality while maintaining safety and reliability.
- Familiarity with quality tools such as Lean principles, measurement systems analysis, design of experiments, statistical process control, root cause analysis, advanced product quality planning (APQP), metrology, process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA), control plans, and various problem-solving methodologies.
- Experience in developing or supporting complex mechanical/structural assemblies, advanced composite systems, fluid component/valve assembly, pre-preg lamination/curing composites, CNC machining, bonding, drilling, fastening, avionics integration and testing, fluid system pressure testing, and welding techniques.
Additional Requirements:
Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and offsite as required.
Compensation and Benefits:
Pay range:
Reliability Engineer/Level I: $95,000 - $115,000 per year
Reliability Engineer/Level II: $110,000 - $130,000 per year
Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.
Base salary is just one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, including company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the opportunity to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks are also included.
Additionally, you may accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays annually. Exempt employees are entitled to 5 days of sick leave per year.
ITAR Requirements:
To comply with U.S. Government export regulations, applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
SpaceX is an Equal Opportunity Employer; employment with SpaceX is based on merit, competence, and qualifications, and will not be influenced by race, color, religion, gender, national origin, veteran status, disability status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, or any other legally protected status.
