Job Title: Dentist I - 49031

Join the Virginia Department of Corrections as a Dentist I - 49031 and contribute to the delivery of high-quality dental care to adult offenders in a correctional facility setting.

Job Summary:

The Dentist I - 49031 will operate a Dentist Office Practice within a correctional facility and be a member of the VADOC Mobile Dental Unit, providing routine and emergency dental care to adult offenders. The successful candidate will supervise Dental Assistant(s) and provide clinical supervision for Dental Hygienist(s).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide routine and emergency dental care to adult offenders, including examining teeth and gums for cavities, infections, and diseases, taking necessary x-rays, and performing fillings and extractions as warranted.
  • Diagnose and develop treatment plans for patients, responsible for the full range of dental care and education provided to patients, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injury, and deformities of the oral cavity.
  • Supervise Dental Assistant(s) and provide clinical supervision for Dental Hygienist(s).
  • Travel to surrounding institutions and field units as part of the Mobile Dental Unit, providing dental care and oral healthcare to patients at those sites.
Requirements:
  • Must have a degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA).
  • Must be licensed to practice Dentistry in Virginia.
  • Must have a Controlled Substances Certificate from the Drug Enforcement Administration.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to diagnose and treat oral health issues and inform patients on preventative care and treatment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous supervisory experience or work experience training and supervising dental staff.
  • Experience providing dental care and treatment in a dentist office, military, or correctional setting.
