Overview:
The Experienced Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection and processing of high-quality blood samples, ensuring accurate patient identification and delivering reliable diagnostic outcomes.
This role operates under direct supervision and is tasked with maintaining and organizing necessary supplies while utilizing laboratory and hospital systems for precise documentation of laboratory activities within established turnaround times.
The position is essential in aiding healthcare providers in making informed diagnoses and providing superior patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Collects high-quality blood samples and maintains competency in iSTAT for quality Point-of-Care (POC) testing, ensuring dependable diagnostic results and supporting timely patient care.
2. Guarantees accurate patient identification, striving for zero rejected blood bank samples, minimal labeling mistakes, and no cases of misidentified patients or mislabeled samples to avert errors in transfusions and diagnostic assessments.
3. Promotes effective communication during shift changes to minimize the risk of errors or omissions and ensure a smooth continuum of care.
4. Manages supplies, including phlebotomy baskets, carts, workspaces, and electronic/telecommunication devices to facilitate efficient phlebotomy procedures, reducing disruptions and enhancing workflow.
5. Conducts regular checks on supply carts to ensure the phlebotomy area is free of expired items, clean, organized, and restocked daily to support efficient phlebotomy operations.
6. Utilizes laboratory and hospital systems for accurate documentation, including collection lists, pending logs, unreceived reports, and labels, to adhere to established turnaround times and promote effective tracking of samples and timely patient care.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred:
Completion of an Accredited Phlebotomy program.
EXPERIENCE:
Preferred: 6 months of relevant medical or laboratory experience.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:
Required:
BLS (CPR) certification from the American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider.
Current Phlebotomy certification from an approved agency such as:
ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) OR
ASPT (American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians) OR
NHA (National Healthcareer Association).
Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant or Medical Laboratory Assistant by ASCP or AMT is acceptable.
Current Licensed Advanced EMT/Paramedic or Certified MT/MLT (ASCP, AMT).
