Job Summary

This role is responsible for providing support to veterinarians and veterinary technicians in a fast-paced zoo environment. The successful candidate will assist with medical procedures, patient care, laboratory analysis, and maintenance of clinical facilities and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist veterinary technicians with medical procedures, including setup and use of equipment and supplies, recording patient monitoring, and breakdown and cleanup after procedures.
  • Support veterinary technicians with in-house laboratory analyses and organizing samples for long-term storage.
  • Assist with filling prescriptions and administering treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Contribute to the daily care of ICU and neonatal patients, following established protocols for patient care, monitoring, and record-keeping.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulatory requirements, including disposal of biological products, inventory of controlled drugs, radiation safety, protection from zoonotic disease, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Assist with maintenance and organization of clinical supply inventory and medical equipment, sterile supplies, and surgical instruments.
  • Support hospital staff with cleaning and organizing the hospital, following established protocols for facility sanitation and disinfection.
  • Assist with husbandry duties, including cleaning enclosures, cleaning dishes and tools, and preparing diets.
Requirements
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record to maintain zoo standards of insurability.
  • Working knowledge of basic methods and techniques of veterinary clinical procedures.
  • Observational skills for medical procedures and patient monitoring.
  • Basic principles of anatomy, physiology, and behavior of various animal species.
  • Basic principles and procedures of safe animal handling and restraint techniques.
  • Operational characteristics of veterinary equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to work with a variety of domestic and wild animals.
  • Provide timely assistance with medical procedures in various situations and conditions.
  • React appropriately and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions and priorities set by supervisors.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Work independently in the absence of immediate supervision.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain mental capacity to make sound decisions and good judgments, prioritize work activities, and demonstrate intellectual capabilities.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
Education and Experience
  • Current student status or completion of a veterinary assistant program.
  • Current student status in an accredited veterinary technology program.
  • Prior work experience in the veterinary medicine field.
Work Environment

The work environment is a team-oriented zoo environment with exposure to a variety of animals, animal body fluids, and animal odors. The role requires working outdoors in all weather conditions and may involve exposure to potentially dangerous animal situations, zoonotic diseases, and disinfecting, laboratory, and medical chemicals.
