Grower Technician

Job Summary:

The Grower Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the highest quality standards are met in the greenhouses at Walters Gardens. This position assists the Section Grower and Lead Grower in maintaining a safe, efficient, and economical growing environment for all plants.

Key Responsibilities:

• Moisture Management: Monitor crops daily to determine optimal irrigation schedules based on growing conditions, plant needs, and moisture levels. Operate, maintain, and schedule all irrigation systems to ensure proper water distribution.

• Fertility Management: Read and assess weekly media testing and water sampling results to schedule and apply fertilizers and nutrients accordingly. Learn and understand different fertilizer blends and rates to achieve optimal plant nutrition.

• Sanitation: Scout for algae, liverwort, and weeds in and around the greenhouses, applying sanitation techniques to control growth. Remove and destroy weeds and liverwort as observed, and keep greenhouse aisles and floor matting free of debris.

• Material Handling: Unload deliveries, store supplies, and assist with unloading cuttings and tissue culture. Help maintain production areas by moving skids, removing waste, and moving dumpsters.

• Additional Duties: Participate in chemical applications, monitor crops, and coordinate mowing and pruning as needed. Assist with mowing and moving plants, and observe and communicate pest and disease issues to the IPM Team, Section Grower, and Lead Grower.

Requirements:

• 2 years of horticulture education or experience
• Basic organizational and math skills
• Computer skills (including Microsoft Office)
• Ability to work on feet for 9 hours each day
• Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50lbs)
• Available to work on weekends as needed
• Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred
