Description

Under general supervision, this role involves delivering exceptional customer and information services to the community by utilizing a comprehensive understanding of library operations. Responsibilities include maintaining library collections through shelving, organizing, and repairing materials. Position schedule is for evening shifts and every other Saturday only.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the circulation desk, which includes checking library materials in and out, registering patrons for new memberships, updating registrations, placing reserves on materials, and responding to various informational inquiries.
  • Assist patrons at the reference desk with inquiries regarding books, resources, and reference materials by utilizing electronic catalogs and databases; provide guidance and instruction on the use of electronic resources.
  • Repair books and perform paper repairs using glue and specialized tapes; cover books, replace spine labels, and assist with the processing of both new and existing materials.
  • Maintain order in the stacks by shelving books and reviewing assigned sections based on the Dewey Decimal system.
  • Prepare materials for shelving, shelve materials, and pull reserved items.
  • Support patrons in utilizing library computers, including locating materials on the shelves and searching for information online.
  • Secure the library at closing by ensuring all patrons have exited, shutting down computers, and closing out the register.
  • Record daily circulation statistics.
  • Reorganize materials as necessary to change shelving locations.
  • Collect daily newspapers and prepare them for library use; retrieve books from drop-off locations.
  • Register patrons for special programs, such as reading initiatives and story time, and assist with conference room reservations.
  • Contribute to the operations of library branches as needed.
  • Receive donated materials and issue receipts.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Required Qualifications

High school graduation or GED equivalent along with 6 months of customer service or closely related experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities. A valid driver's license is required.
Supplemental Information
  • Familiarity with books, magazines, and related materials available to the public.
  • Understanding of bookkeeping and/or accounting practices.
  • Proficiency in using standard office machines and various audio-visual and computer equipment.
  • Ability to maintain clerical records and follow established procedures with attention to detail.
  • Capability to instruct patrons in the use of various office machines, computer programs, and library reference materials.
  • Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with library patrons and the general public.
  • Capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to assess and compare observable characteristics of data, people, or items.
  • Ability to convey or exchange information effectively.
  • Ability to plan work and develop procedures; to learn and evaluate complex information for decision-making.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to utilize basic mathematical formulas and perform calculations.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions and characteristics.
  • Ability to manage interactions with individuals under stress and respond appropriately in emergencies.
