Sterile Processing Technician CWR Job Summary

The Central Supply Technician is responsible for the cleaning, processing, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation, patient care equipment, and reusable medical/surgical items. This position also functions as a Case Cart Attendant for the Operating Room.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Receives, sorts, processes, assembles, or sterilizes patient care equipment and surgical instruments according to established departmental policies.
  • Understands all detergents and disinfectants used to process items and implements Universal Precautions and proper use of P.P.E.
  • Operates and loads sterilizers (Steam, ETO, Sterrad, and Steris) and assures biological tests and Bowie Dick tests are correctly performed, incubated, read, and recorded.
  • Assures sterilization records are completed correctly by recording all items processed, using the correct label/load gun, reading and interpreting chemical integrator per load, observing, and initialing all computerized printouts for accuracy.
  • Prepares case carts for delivery to the room by using doctor's preference information to assemble required instruments, drugs, and special equipment.
  • Notifies the nursing team in the room of missing items and confers with the coordinator about shortages of supplies and equipment and completes a daily checklist.
  • Lifts a minimum of 50 lbs., pushes, and pulls a minimum of 60 lbs. and stands for the length of the shift.
Requirements:
  • Central Processing Course or 1 year of experience in instrument processing.
  • 1-2 years of Acute Care Experience.
  • All areas of the SPD Department - Decontamination, Prep & Pack, Sterilization, HLD, Instrument Tracking system.
  • Experience with all service specialties; Neuro, Ortho, Vascular, General, Robotics, Plastics, GYN, ENT.
  • National Certification: CRCST or CBSPDT.
  • CBSPD or HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM).
