Perianesthesia Nurse

The Perianesthesia Nurse at Riverview Health is a registered nurse responsible for the care of patients undergoing anesthesia. This role requires medical management of each patient and the ability to address critical medical emergencies pre- and post-surgery.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for surgery or procedures, ensuring patient charts are initiated, complete patient assessments, confirm procedures and surgical sites, initiate patient IVs, perform ordered labs, dispense preop medications, and document all information and care provided.
- Provide instructions to patients and support persons on what to expect throughout the surgery process.
- Coordinate patient care needs with other disciplines to ensure continuity of care.
- Monitor patient recovery from anesthesia and medical procedures, regularly recording patient vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and respiration rate.
- Assess patients for adverse reactions to anesthesia and respond accordingly.
- Educate patients on potential reactions or side effects of anesthesia and provide post-procedure discharge instructions, including physical, psychological, social, safety, and educational needs.
- Provide orientation and training to new employees as assigned.
- Function as testing personnel under CLIA regulations as required.
- Assist with financial management of designated areas by monitoring supply usage and waste.
- Minimum: Associate Degree as a Registered Nurse from an accredited school of nursing.
- Preferred: Bachelor's Degree as a Registered Nurse from an accredited school of nursing.
- Minimum: Two years of previous ambulatory surgery, PACU, critical care, and/or strong medical/surgical nursing experience.
- Preferred: Five or more years of experience with Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse (CAPA) or Certified Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) certification.
- Registered Nurse valid to practice in the state of Indiana by date of hire or transfer.
- Basic Life Safety (American Heart Association) certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (American Heart Association) certification.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course certification.
