Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Histology Technician to join our team at St Mary Medical Center. As a Histology Technician, you will be responsible for performing routine and special histology procedures for anatomic pathology. You will assist the Pathologist as requested and ensure that all tissue specimens are correctly embedded, cut, labeled, and stained.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and special histology procedures for anatomic pathology
  • Assist the Pathologist as requested
  • Correctly and safely embed, cut, label, and stain tissue specimens
  • Correctly cover slip and label all slides
  • Accurately file and retrieve all slides and blocks
  • Consistently demonstrate teamwork and recognize problems to take appropriate action
  • Prioritize workload based on volume and safely perform all routine maintenance and cleaning
  • Recognize malfunctions and implement corrective actions, and consistently complete documentation of maintenance procedures and/or instrument malfunctions
  • Communicate instrumentation status to appropriate personnel and monitor inventory levels and follow appropriate protocol for reordering supplies
  • Demonstrate adequate knowledge of appropriate functions and review specimen logs to confirm completion of work and resolve outstanding specimens
  • Provide support to Cytology as needed and attend procedures to prepare slides for Pathologist on-site review
  • Accurately prepare and send out specimens for ancillary testing to reference labs as requested and accurately register patients and specimens in Hospital computer system and Pathology computer system
  • Assist the Pathologist or PA while grossing specimens and recognize specific problems to take appropriate corrective action in accordance with departmental policy
  • Maintain system security and demonstrate proper telephone etiquette, and consistently assume responsibility for calls, correctly answer questions, direct inquiries, and take messages
  • Adapt work schedule to meet emergency staffing needs and be responsive, courteous, respectful, and cooperative in completing tasks
Requirements
  • Technical School/1 Year College Required
  • 2-4 years experience preferred
