Job Summary:

This is a development program designed for individuals who want to become DOT drivers but do not have the required license or tractor/trailer experience. The primary requirement of this program is that the individual must obtain a CDL–Permit within two months of entering into the program. Upon successful completion of the driver training program, the expectation is to promote the trainee to a DOT Route Service Associate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn to be proficient in performing delivery duties while maintaining a good safety record.
  • Develop a sense of urgency while learning to deliver product along assigned routes consisting of multiple stops with various levels of difficulty.
  • Read customer invoices to determine items to be moved, gathered, distributed, and delivered.
  • Learn to use electronic equipment such as Xata on-board computer and handheld scanners.
  • Adhere to the rules governed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
  • Maintain accuracy of delivered product with no damage due to mishandling.
  • Obey traffic laws and follow established traffic and transportation procedures.
  • Conduct safety inspections of vehicles in compliance with DOT and FMCSR guidelines and check fluid levels daily, such as gas, oil, water, tires, lights, and brakes to ensure that vehicles are in proper/safe working condition.
  • Articulate and report all mechanical problems encountered with vehicles.
  • Maintain records such as Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports and Driver Hours of Service Logs in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Regulations.
  • Report delays, accidents, or other traffic and transportation situations to transportation management.
  • Become proficient with Smith Systems Defensive Driver Training.

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing good customer service, including needs assessment and meeting quality standards for services.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Well-organized.
  • Ability to multi-task assignments and have the willingness to learn new processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Good mathematical skills.
  • Proficient with a personal computer.
  • High School Diploma or GED (General Education Degree).
