Responsibilities:- Plan and implement school health services to meet the unique needs of students in our schools.
- Collaborate with principals and teachers to provide health education and in-service programs for students and staff.
- Utilize community health resources to provide school health services and support for students and families.
- Document health information and provide statistical reports to support school health initiatives.
- Assist in modifying educational programs for students with health conditions that impact their ability to attend school or learn.
- Assess immunization status of students and provide information for reporting to the West Virginia State Health Department.
- Identify and report students at high risk for health problems and provide support and resources for their families.
- Attend IEP meetings and write health components of the Individualized Education Program for students.
- Designate personnel to perform specialized health procedures and train and supervise them as needed.
- Provide emergency care and first aid to injured and ill students and staff, and maintain and replenish health supplies.
- Counsel with students and parents, and confer with teachers and other staff to share and interpret student health problems.
- Follow up on all abnormalities found and assist parents in referring to appropriate health care providers.
- Control communicable diseases by observing signs and symptoms and providing follow-up measures.
- Maintain and promote confidentiality within the legal, regulatory, and ethical parameters of health and education.
- Record all health information and compile health statistics for monthly, annual, and special reports.
- Coordinate and assist in special medical services and clinics approved by the Office of Health Services.
- Make home visits as necessary and coordinate with school social workers and other staff as indicated.
- Coordinate with school social workers and family resource workers to arrange transportation to health care agencies as needed.
- Follow up on all injury reports submitted by principals and provide pre-enrollment screening for preschool and kindergarten students.
- Complete Medicaid billing forms on eligible students when appropriate and investigate requests from physicians for medical homebound placements.
- Re-evaluate students on medical homebound placements each quarter and utilize self-appraisal for the improvement of administrative skills.
- Demonstrate unbiased attitudes in fulfilling administrative responsibilities and utilize research in school nurse practice.
Requirements:
- BS in Nursing, minimum 5 years RN experience, and a valid WV RN license.
- Baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing and West Virginia State license to practice as a registered nurse.
- Meets West Virginia Department of Education certification requirements for school nurse.
- Demonstrates expertise and experience in working with school-age children in health-related fields.
- Demonstrates ability to work as a member of a team and individually without direct supervision.
- Demonstrates ability to organize and schedule time efficiently and maintain complete and accurate records.
- Demonstrates knowledge of important, relevant, and current issues pertaining to school-age children and health education programs.
- Demonstrates an understanding of health counseling techniques and possesses health assessment and observation skills.
- Possesses at least minimal knowledge of local, state, and national health resources.
Terms of Employment:
- 200 days
- Salary in accordance with established pay schedule
