Position Overview:

Under general supervision, this role involves overseeing, assigning, and reviewing the work of personnel dedicated to providing services within the Planning Division. Responsibilities encompass areas such as current and advanced planning, zoning management, affordable housing initiatives, and special projects. The role ensures high-quality work and compliance with established guidelines while independently handling complex tasks relevant to the assigned responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Direct and manage the work of staff in designated sections of the Planning Division, focusing on current and advanced planning, zoning management, and special projects.
  2. Establish operational schedules and resource allocation; collaborate with management to identify needs and optimize resource use.
  3. Contribute to the formulation of objectives, policies, and procedures; recommend enhancements to existing standards and ensure adherence to approved practices.
  4. Participate in the recruitment and training of planning staff; address performance issues and implement corrective measures as necessary.
  5. Assist in budget preparation and oversight; monitor financial performance and ensure alignment with allocated resources.
  6. Manage the activities of boards and commissions involved in city planning, providing necessary support and coordination.
  7. Engage with city officials and community members during public meetings, presenting reports and offering guidance on planning matters.
  8. Collaborate with other departments and external organizations to facilitate project applications and information requests.
  9. Oversee the development and administration of city plans, ensuring compliance with regulations and preparing necessary reports.
  10. Act as a liaison for zoning administration and environmental coordination, interpreting regulations and managing public hearings.
  11. Supervise public counter services and manage community planning studies, analyzing data for both current and long-range projects.
  12. Research and apply for grants, managing funding disbursement and reporting requirements.
  13. Address complex citizen inquiries and complaints, providing clear information on zoning and development issues.
  14. Stay informed on trends in urban planning and zoning, integrating new insights into departmental practices.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in urban planning principles, project management, and supervisory skills. A Bachelor's degree in urban planning or a related field is required, along with significant experience in community development and zoning administration.
