About the Role:

The Hanover Insurance Group is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Marine Underwriting Director to join our team. As a key member of our Inland Marine team, you will be responsible for managing all sales and underwriting functions within assigned territories.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies to drive business growth and profitability.
  • Identify and capitalize on new business opportunities and cross-sell potential.
  • Collaborate with distribution partners and local branch teams to achieve business objectives.
  • Partner with leadership to develop and drive regional business strategy.
  • Oversee the operational and technical work of the underwriting team, ensuring consistent handling of complex claims.

Leadership and Coaching:

  • Create a high-performance culture through effective communication, quality goal setting, and proactive management of team performance.
  • Drive proactive development and advancement of key talent, recruiting and retaining top performers.
  • Manage the underwriting team to achieve business objectives, providing business direction, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Collaborate with Operations to execute best practices, optimize productivity, and manage service and quality with agents.
  • Effectively manage expenses in line with business priorities.

Technical Underwriting:

  • Apply sound underwriting principles to complex accounts, translating business rationale to the team and colleagues.
  • Evaluate and identify technical training needs, conducting formal and informal training sessions.
  • Manage UW account referrals to meet productivity targets, allocating resources for maximum return.
  • Assess underwriting skills, delegating authority based on demonstrated skills, and create plans to increase technical capabilities.
  • Develop strategic financial plans, adjusting as needed in response to changing performance indicators.
  • Drive profit improvement processes, balancing retention with rate adjustments.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in P&C, with a focus on Specialty (Inland Marine) accounts and agency relationships.
  • 3+ years of demonstrated success in managing or leading others.
  • Effective problem-solving, anticipating issues, and seeking collaborative solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with strong face-to-face interactions, presentations, and written communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and influence across multiple levels of the organization.
  • High degree of business, insurance, and marketplace knowledge.
