As the Building Code Enforcement Specialist, you will be integral in upholding the safety and standards of our community.

Your primary responsibility will be to enforce the town's ordinances and regulations, ensuring adherence to local laws.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections and investigate complaints related to code violations.
  • Collaborate with residents and businesses to resolve issues effectively.
  • Assist the Planning and Zoning Official in enhancing the town's aesthetics and quality of life.
  • Coordinate with various town departments on code-related initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with the Snow Hill Housing, Building, and Zoning Codes, as well as the Historic District guidelines.
  • Perform inspections at different stages of construction for both residential and commercial projects.
  • Identify code violations and issue necessary notices and orders.
  • Respond to complaints and conduct field investigations until resolution.
  • Monitor exterior modifications of residential properties.
  • Administer minimum standards for structures and enforce penalties when applicable.
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, findings, and corrective actions.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports reflecting project status and compliance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in code enforcement or a related field.
  • Familiarity with local codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Ability to obtain ICC Certification as a Residential Building Inspector within 12 months and as a Commercial Building Inspector within 24 months of hire.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in investigating complaints and documenting findings.
  • Ability to work independently and make informed decisions.
  • Attention to detail and multitasking capabilities.
  • Customer service-oriented mindset.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Associate's Degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of building and property maintenance codes is preferred.
  • Experience in a local government setting is preferred.

  • Physical capability to perform inspections and navigate various terrains.
