Position Overview

The Senior Culinary Supervisor plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient operation of the Prepared Foods kitchen during designated shifts. This position involves overseeing the opening and closing of the department as scheduled. Key responsibilities include supporting kitchen personnel, managing daily production tasks, addressing equipment and product quality concerns, resolving customer inquiries, and performing the duties of a production cook. The Senior Culinary Supervisor is vital to the kitchen team, providing immediate leadership in accordance with departmental standards and leveraging on-shift experience to suggest enhancements in operational processes.

Key Responsibilities

Ensures the effective operation of the Prepared Foods kitchen throughout the shift

  • Offers real-time supervision and assistance to kitchen staff, ensuring adherence to customer service and operational protocols.
  • Identifies and resolves equipment and product quality issues by executing basic troubleshooting steps as per standard operating procedures (SOPs) and escalating when necessary.
  • Addresses customer inquiries and complaints in alignment with the Co-op's service standards, ensuring customer satisfaction and asset protection.
  • Monitors compliance with food safety regulations among all department personnel during the shift.
Manages department opening and closing procedures as scheduled
  • Adheres to departmental and store-wide SOPs to maintain security, including locking and unlocking the facility, conducting opening and closing inspections, and effectively communicating staffing, equipment, and supply concerns.
  • Develops production lists and outlines workflow for the scheduled shift, communicating requirements to team members and making adjustments as needed.
  • Ensures that opening and closing responsibilities, such as cleaning, sanitation, and temperature checks, are completed thoroughly and punctually.
Performs the duties of a Production Cook as required during the shift
  • Demonstrates recipe execution and adherence to departmental standards in food preparation.
  • Exemplifies safe work practices.
  • Balances supervisory responsibilities with hands-on cooking tasks effectively.
Trains department personnel as directed
  • Provides training to new and developing staff on proper techniques and behaviors.
  • Creates and updates departmental SOPs, training materials, and other documentation as instructed by the department manager.
  • Utilizes on-shift experiences to recommend updates or modifications to departmental processes and procedures as necessary.
  • Models effective communication channels to raise concerns and address issues.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Preferred:
  • Proficient knife skills, including the ability to perform specific cuts.
  • Experience with basic maintenance of kitchen equipment.
  • Experience in leading a team, preferably in a commercial kitchen setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in customer service.
  • Training in kitchen sanitation and food safety practices.
Minimum:
  • Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication).
  • Strong command of spoken and written English.
  • Effective communication skills; ability to work closely and cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to function effectively as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of basic kitchen safety, with the ability to instruct others.
  • Time management skills sufficient to independently prioritize and complete critical tasks promptly.
  • Experience in a commercial kitchen environment.

The employee must be able to maintain focus in an environment with multiple levels of noise and prioritize competing demands for attention.
