Healthcare Support Specialist, Medical-Surgical Unit

Position Overview:
The role of a Patient Care Assistant is vital in providing direct support to patients within the Medical-Surgical Unit. This position involves performing essential caregiving tasks under the guidance of registered nurses, ensuring that patients receive high-quality care and assistance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Enhance patient satisfaction by implementing best practices such as effective communication techniques, timely updates, and attentive care.
- Monitor and document vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, as well as other relevant measurements.
- Encourage and assist patients with mobility, breathing exercises, and the use of therapeutic devices as outlined in their care plans.
- Support patients with daily living activities, including meal distribution, feeding, and hydration.
- Provide personal care, which may involve bathing, oral hygiene, grooming, and maintaining a clean and comfortable environment.
- Manage waste and collect specimens as required, ensuring proper documentation of intake and output.
- Contribute to a safe and organized environment by reporting any equipment issues and managing supplies effectively.
- Assist with patient positioning, mobility, and the use of assistive devices as necessary.
- Respond promptly to patient requests and call lights, ensuring their needs are met in a timely manner.
- Document significant changes in patient conditions and communicate these to the nursing staff.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in patient areas and workspaces.
- Prepare and check medical equipment for proper functioning, ensuring readiness for patient care.
- Demonstrate knowledge of age-specific care requirements and adhere to safety protocols and policies.
- Engage in ongoing education and quality improvement initiatives as part of professional development.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, within the scope of practice.
Qualifications:
Education: A combination of formal education and relevant experience is acceptable, typically equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. Preference may be given to candidates with a high school diploma or GED.
Experience: Familiarity with medical terminology is advantageous. Successful completion of Covenant Health's orientation and training program is required prior to patient interaction.
Licensure: CPR certification is mandatory.
