Job Summary

The City of Suffolk, VA is seeking a skilled Utility Technician to join our Traffic Engineering team. As a Utility Technician, you will be responsible for performing visual inspections of construction areas, reading and interpreting utility maps, and using specialized electronic equipment to detect and locate underground utilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform visual inspections of construction areas to identify potential utility conflicts
  • Read and interpret utility maps to determine the presence and type of underground utilities
  • Use specialized electronic equipment to detect and locate underground utilities
  • Communicate with excavators, utility representatives, and company personnel regarding underground facilities
  • Provide accurate documentation and sketches related to all locates completed
  • Update and provide corrections to existing utility maps and drawings
  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment, including dump trucks, aerial lift vehicles, trencher/backhoe equipment, and digger derrick
  • Respond to emergency repair calls and complaints, making appropriate repairs in varying weather conditions
  • Assist with installing and inspecting traffic signal equipment, including underground wiring control boxes, signal heads, and traffic counters
Requirements
  • Graduation from high school supplemented by vocational coursework in electronics or electrical repair
  • 1-2 years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic control devices
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of employment
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II certification within 24 months of employment
