Department: Family Services / Elders' Meal Program

Reports To: Jamie Queen

FLSA/Time Status: Non-Exempt/On Call

Position Summary: This role is accountable for the comprehensive management of meal service operations, which includes food preparation, procurement of kitchen supplies, and food items. The individual will collaborate with another Cook to ensure a cohesive approach to meal planning and preparation that meets the nutritional and dietary requirements of the tribal elder community. Adherence to the Tribe's food handling policies and procedures is essential. This position is on-call and funded through grants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate effectively as part of a two-person team to coordinate the Elders Meal Program in alignment with AOA Senior Nutrition grant objectives.
  • Plan and execute three buffet-style meals weekly, including a full salad bar and beverages for approximately 50 guests per meal. This includes two lunches on Mondays and Wednesdays, and one dinner on Thursdays, with an additional lunch on Tuesdays featuring soup and sandwiches.
  • Prepare menu items that are nutritious, appealing, and cater to low-fat and low-sugar dietary needs.
  • Uphold safety standards, infection control, and food handling procedures as per the Tribe's guidelines. Participate in regular kitchen inspections and address any identified issues.
  • Conduct temperature checks on food, beverages, and salad bar items.
  • Ensure adherence to the pre-planned menu, presenting meals attractively, including main courses, side dishes, salad bar selections, and beverages. Maintain freshness and proper presentation of salad bar items.
  • Prepare take-out meals for homebound elders or those unable to attend communal meals due to health issues. These meals may be picked up by caregivers or delivered by the Elders Assistant.
  • Promptly inform the supervisor or Director of Family Services of any potential health or safety concerns affecting elders or meal program guests.
  • Unpack and store all food and supplies appropriately.
  • Maintain kitchen and dining areas in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition. Perform clean-up duties post-meal service, including dishwashing, table cleaning, and waste disposal.
  • Operate the kitchen efficiently and economically.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Supervisory Role: This position does not involve supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications: To succeed in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedural manuals.
  • Proficiency in basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret various instructions.
  • Must possess a valid Food Handler's Permit and First Aid Certificate, or obtain one within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful candidates must pass a criminal and employment background check.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of this position include frequent standing, handling, reaching, and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. Special vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: Employees may be exposed to warm, humid conditions and work near moving mechanical parts. The noise level is typically moderate.

Drug-Free Workplace: Candidates will be required to undergo drug and alcohol screening in accordance with the Tribe's Drug-Free Workplace Policy.

Indian Preference: Preference will be given to Squaxin Island tribal members or other individuals from federally recognized tribes.
