Job Title: Head Nurse-Ophthalmology

At NYC Health + Hospitals, we are committed to delivering high-quality care to our patients. As a Head Nurse-Ophthalmology, you will play a critical role in ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of patient care in our Ophthalmology department.

Job Summary:

The Head Nurse-Ophthalmology is responsible for managing the Ophthalmology unit and ensuring that quality care is rendered for every patient assigned to the unit. This includes coordinating patient care, monitoring staff performance, and ensuring that all nursing personnel are proficient in the use of the electronic medical record.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Coordinate patient care and monitor staff performance.
  2. Serve as a resource person to staff members and as a preceptor for new nursing personnel.
  3. Ensure documentation of patient care and health information.
  4. Monitor patient care to ensure delivery of direct/indirect patient care, documentation according to policy and procedure, and patient needs are met.
  5. Assess, monitor, and evaluate patients receiving conscious sedation analgesia (pre-intra, post-procedure).
  6. Provide education to patients, pre and post procedures.
  7. Observe waiting time for patients scheduled for procedures.
  8. Quality improvement monitoring, ensure that staff nurses collect data for QI and submit written reports monthly and verbal reports quarterly in QI meetings.
  9. Check emergency equipment every shift.
  10. Conduct risk assessment to reduce adverse events.
  11. Ensures that safety management issues are appropriately addressed.
  12. Explains, involves, and instructs patients' family concerning the therapeutic regimen and environment of care.
  13. Effectively utilizes the electronic as well as the paper medical record and ensure the nursing staff are proficient in the same process.
Requirements:
  • A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
  • Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
