Job Summary

The YMCA of East Tennessee is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Lifeguard to join our team. As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and positive atmosphere in the pool area, ensuring the well-being of our members and participants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area to prevent accidents and ensure member safety.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and staff to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Accurately record and maintain records as required by the YMCA and state Health Department code.
  • Perform equipment checks and ensure necessary equipment is available for use.
  • Conduct regular pool checks for hazardous conditions and take necessary action to address any issues.
  • Perform chemical testing and document results, taking appropriate action as needed.
  • Attend all staff meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, and procedures, including emergency and safety protocols.
  • Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
Requirements
  • Current CPR for the Professional certification required for hire and must be maintained.
  • O2, AED, and First Aid certifications required for hire and must be maintained.
  • Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguarding Certification required for hire and must be maintained.
  • New Employee Orientation required to complete before starting work.
Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.

Physical Demands

The employee must be able to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and climb or balance. Occasionally required to walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to lift equipment and lift small to average size child. Must be able to pass lifeguard water test, remain alert, scan all areas of pool with clear vision, and perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for water rescue.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. Must be able to project voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
