Nursing Assistant

The Nursing Assistant - Emergency Department position is a critical role in providing direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. The incumbent will be trained for specific functions such as phlebotomy, 12-lead EKGs, Health Unit Coordinator clerical functions, or telemetry monitoring. The Nursing Assistant will assist with and perform appropriate nursing tasks for patients, ensuring their safety and well-being.
Key Responsibilities- Assist with and perform under the direct supervision of the registered nurse therapeutic and diversion activities for patients.
- Obtain blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and blood glucose (finger stick) and record them appropriately in the medical record.
- Provide patients with personal hygiene, i.e., bathing, shaving, teeth brushing, nail care, hair combing, etc.
- Assist or provide patients with the appropriate level of assistance with activities of daily living, bathing, dressing, transferring, ambulating, feeding, and toileting.
- Weigh patients and record them appropriately in the medical record.
- Answer call lights promptly and in person.
- Assist during emergency treatment situations obtaining equipment as necessary and running errands as needed.
- Assist in emergency situations including, but not limited to CPR as needed.
- Assist the nurse/MD/NP during procedures/treatments as needed following appropriate standards and guidelines.
- Complete all required Nursing Assistant initial and annual competency requirements.
- Assist the team in reinforcing educational needs with patients.
- Consistently follow the Plan of Care for each patient.
- Perform one to one observation as assigned.
- Maintain positive and constructive professional working relationships with patients, families, medical staff, volunteers, and co-workers.
- Transport patients as assigned off the unit for various diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
- Follow all infection control procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- Must be able to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents.
- Must be able to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner.
- Must be able to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals.
