Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Medical Support Specialist to join our team at Medstar Health in the Baltimore-Washington metro region. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment, providing direct patient care and supporting medical staff with procedures and tests.

About the Role

As a Medical Support Specialist, you will be part of a patient-centered care team, responsible for delivering high-quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Your duties will include:

  • Assisting patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and personal hygiene, including bathing, mouth care, dressing, skin care, positioning, feeding, ambulation, toileting, and range of motion activities.
  • Collecting specimens, performing venipuncture/phlebotomy, obtaining EKGs, applying external telemetry monitoring boxes/devices, and inserting intravenous (IV) catheters, changing IV sites and dressings, and routine inspection of IV sites.
  • Performing routine sterile, non-sterile, and other treatments/activities, including but not limited to: tube feedings; ostomy care; Foley Catheter care and removal; perineal care; simple dressing changes and wound care; turning and positioning; postmortem care and transportation of body to the morgue; maintenance of drainage tubes with/without pump or suction; care of oxygen equipment; and assistance with the application, maintenance, and removal of traction, casts, splints, and exercise equipment.
  • Maintaining the comfort, privacy, confidentiality, and dignity of each patient in the delivery of services. Performing patient observation duty, including 1:1 observation, and application of restraints. Preparing patients to be seen by providers. Assisting providers and registered nurses in patient examinations and procedures. Rounds on all assigned patients based on established standards. Responds to questions from patients, families, and visitors in a prompt, courteous, and respectful manner, referring them to appropriate personnel if necessary. Reports changes in the patient's condition to the registered nurse and care team, as necessary. Initiates and assists in CPR when indicated.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and safety of patient rooms/environment by distributing and changing linen/towels, removing used meal trays, checking bed siderails and safety restraints, etc. Assists with environmental services support such as linen management, trash removal, and cleaning patient rooms as needed. Receives and stocks equipment and supplies and maintains orderly supply and utility rooms. Transports and/or escorts patients during discharges, transfers, and/or medical appointments. Completes errands such as delivering specimens to the laboratory, equipment, and supplies, etc., as required.
Requirements
  • Completion of an approved nursing assistant certification program.
  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from the relevant authority.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • 12 months experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification preferred.
  • Experience as a care technician; general health care experience in acute care, long-term care, or other settings; student nurse in junior or senior year preferred.
Salary and Benefits

The estimated salary for this position is $45,000 - $55,000 per annum, depending on experience. Medstar Health offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
