Job Title: GIS Intern

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented GIS Intern to join our team at the State of Alaska. As a GIS Intern, you will have the opportunity to work with our experienced GIS team to develop and implement geographic information systems (GIS) solutions to support our organization's goals and objectives.

Job Summary:

The GIS Intern will assist in the development and maintenance of GIS databases, perform spatial analysis, and create maps and reports to support decision-making. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in GIS principles and practices, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of GIS databases, including data entry, data cleaning, and data analysis.
  • Perform spatial analysis using GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap.
  • Create maps and reports to support decision-making, including data visualization and cartography.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop and implement GIS solutions to support organizational goals and objectives.
  • Provide technical support and training to staff on GIS software and best practices.
Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college or university in a curriculum leading to an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in geography, land surveying, geomatics, GIS, computer science, or other related field.
  • One year of curriculum in geography, surveying, geomatics, GIS, or other related field, or one year of working experience using GIS software for core work functions, or any equivalent combination that totals one year.
  • Proof of enrollment and documentation of curriculum studied.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions:

The GIS Intern will work in an office environment with occasional fieldwork and remote locations. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be able to work independently and as part of a team, and have a strong foundation in GIS principles and practices.
