Overview:

The Evening Histology Specialist plays a crucial role in the Pathology laboratory, tasked with the meticulous processing of specimens with minimal oversight. Utilizing advanced techniques and equipment, this position ensures the preparation of high-quality slides for pathologist evaluation and diagnosis. The specialist is adept at operating sophisticated machinery and staining systems, addressing routine challenges effectively. Familiarity with laboratory protocols and procedures is essential. Responsibilities also encompass inventory management, workstation organization, and adherence to regulatory standards. Effective communication with pathologists, supervisors, and clients is vital when direct leadership is unavailable.

Key Responsibilities:

Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Possessing a solid understanding of anatomy, pathology, and medical terminology to execute job functions proficiently.
  • Determining the correct submission criteria, handling, and processing of specimens for various procedures.
  • Utilizing appropriate laboratory equipment for all histological protocols with efficiency.
  • Executing complex staining techniques, including immunohistochemical methods.
  • Participating in specimen grossing under the guidance of a pathologist through direct and indirect observation.
  • Conducting routine maintenance, cleaning, and quality control checks on laboratory equipment.
  • Preparing and assessing solutions and stains, ensuring quality assurance.
  • Managing data entry, specimen identification, and tracking within the laboratory information system, while upholding patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Verifying quality control reactions microscopically to ensure accuracy.
  • Completing case lists and distributing assignments to pathologists.
  • Storing specimens correctly for long-term preservation.
  • Assisting in maintaining accreditation standards, including preventive maintenance and documentation.
  • Meeting established turnaround times for all tasks.
  • Ensuring adequate supply levels for the histology laboratory.
  • Troubleshooting equipment issues as necessary.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
  • Reviewing and adhering to all procedures and policies.
  • Completing all required safety training.
  • Demonstrating flexibility in providing coverage for the histology lab.
  • Exhibiting professionalism and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Performing additional tasks as requested by the histology supervisor or laboratory manager.
Accountability:

This role involves fulfilling responsibilities in alignment with organizational policies and legal requirements, overseeing all technical operations from specimen requisition to reporting results to physicians and facilities.

Qualifications:

To excel in this position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in biological health science or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure as a Histotechnologist by the FL DOH.
  • An associate's degree in laboratory science or histotechnology with a minimum of 5 years of experience in high complexity testing.
  • Current ASCP certification (HT or HTL) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with pathology laboratory regulations (CAP, CLIA) is required.
  • Preferred experience of at least 3 years in a histology laboratory.
  • Immunohistochemistry certification (QIHC, ASCP) is preferred.
Communication Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and effectively communicate information. Proficiency in interpreting complex regulations and guidelines is essential.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to apply mathematical operations to assess testing methods and validity.

Reasoning Skills:

Ability to identify problems, assist in data collection, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to aid in problem-solving.

Computer Proficiency:

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel, and comfortable with laboratory information systems.

Equipment Proficiency:

Demonstrated ability to operate all laboratory equipment and troubleshoot technical issues.

Work Environment:

This position involves exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals, and potential radiation. The noise level is typically moderate.

Physical Requirements:

Employees must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and be able to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods. Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision.

Customer Service:

Ability to uphold operational initiatives to meet or exceed customer service standards in a respectful and timely manner.

Team Collaboration:

Ability to work collaboratively on larger projects within the Pathology Laboratory and across various functional areas.
