We are seeking a skilled Genomics Specialist with a focus on Transcriptomics to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is a full-time position with Guidehouse.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and enhance computational biology and bioinformatics algorithms for the analysis, management, interpretation, visualization, and presentation of original scientific data.
- Engage in scientific collaborations with medical professionals and researchers, which may lead to authorships and acknowledgments in scientific publications.
- Collect detailed requirements from stakeholders and assess existing tools for novel analyses or create new algorithms/tools for the required analysis.
- Document and oversee collaborative efforts and training provided to researchers.
- Offer on-site, immediate support and troubleshooting for researchers utilizing computational biology software.
- Research, create, and deliver training materials to effectively communicate and promote computational biology techniques and software usage among NIH researchers.
- Stay updated on current and emerging computational biology technologies and tools.
- Collaborate with software developers to integrate genomic software solutions within enterprise platforms.
Qualifications:
- Graduate degree
- A minimum of FOUR (4) years of relevant experience
- Strong understanding of genomics, molecular biology, and technologies such as qPCR and next-generation sequencing.
- Proven expertise in analyzing large-scale transcriptomics data (especially RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, and RNA velocity) and familiarity with a wide range of relevant open-source software (Cellranger, seurat, scanpy, velocyto, etc.) or pipelines (DESeq2, Salmon, Kallisto, etc.).
- Experience with relevant genomic databases and browsers and their annotations (NCBI, Refseq, Ensembl, GEO, IGV, UCSC Genome Browser).
- Proficiency in UNIX/Linux and its command-line environment, including scripting (shell, Perl, Python, etc.).
- Experience with high-performance parallel computing environments (e.g., SGE, PBS).
- Familiarity with statistical analysis methods using R, Python, or related software.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation, written, and verbal communication skills to convey computational biology principles to non-specialists clearly and effectively.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly learn new software.
- Capacity to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously with effective time management skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in using open-source bioinformatics applications that employ ontologies, pathways, and/or networks at both individual gene and genomic scales.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) in computational biology, bioinformatics, genetics, or related life, physical, or computational sciences with at least one publication demonstrating the use or development of computational biology applications.
- Familiarity with de novo genome assembly and annotation tools (e.g., Canu, SPAdes, RAST).
- Experience constructing pipelines in open architecture platforms (WDL/Cromwell, Snakemake, etc.), including end-to-end tasks for NGS analysis tools.
- Understanding of issues related to the storage and management of genomic-scale data.
- Strong background in molecular/cellular biology, immunology, and/or virology, including practical laboratory experience.
- Proficiency in analyzing various large-scale genomic sequencing data, including ChIP-Seq, ATAC-Seq, and Methyl-Seq.
- Familiarity with variant analysis from whole genome or whole exome sequencing data and experience with a broad spectrum of relevant open-source software or pipelines (BWA, HiSAT, STAR, GATK, SnpEff, VEP, DESeq, etc.).
