Job Description

Job Title: Fire Chief

Job Summary:

The City of Portland, ME is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Fire Chief to lead its Fire Department. As a key member of the City's leadership team, the Fire Chief will be responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight to the department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality fire and emergency medical services to the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall direction and leadership to the Fire Department, including planning, organizing, and evaluating the department's activities and programs.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the department's effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with other department directors and City officials to achieve the City's goals and objectives.
  • Represent the Fire Department and the City in the community and at external events.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards, including National Fire Protection Association standards.
  • Develop and manage the department's budget and resources.
  • Lead and manage a team of firefighters and emergency medical technicians, providing guidance, coaching, and mentoring to ensure their professional development and success.
  • Stay up-to-date with modern developments in firefighting, emergency medical services, and related activities, and apply this knowledge to improve the department's services and operations.

Requirements:

  • A four-year degree in management, public administration, fire science, or a related field, along with ten years of progressively more responsible experience in the fire service; or a combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the principles of public administration with special reference to personnel and budget administration.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern developments in the fields of firefighting, EMS, emergency management, and related activities.
  • Certification as an EMT or Paramedic preferred.
  • Ability to analyze the department's effectiveness and develop and implement innovative practices and programs to improve department performance.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and direct the work of a number of subordinate operating units.
  • Ability to conduct oneself with tact and diplomacy and maintain good relationships with City officials, employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to direct the operations of personnel and equipment under emergency situations.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

  • Competitive salary range: $129,633 - $164,244 annually.
