Job Title: Clinical Assistant - Medical Support Specialist

At Mount Sinai Health System, we are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Assistant - Medical Support Specialist to join our team. As a Clinical Assistant - Medical Support Specialist, you will provide clinical and administrative support to physicians and surgeons, ensuring the highest level of patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate patient care by serving as a liaison between physicians, patients, families, internal/external healthcare providers, homecare providers, and insurance companies.
  • Mentor and train less experienced staff members.
  • Assist physicians with various procedures, take vital signs, relay instructions to patients and/or families, and answer calls.
  • Fulfill clerical responsibilities, including sending and receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, and completing forms and requisitions.
  • Enter orders into the electronic medical record (EMR) system or prepare prescription refill requests on behalf of the physician for review and approval.
  • Perform medical scribe functions as directed by the supervising physician, depending on the needs of the department.
  • Inventory, order, or restock medical supplies as applicable.
  • Provide set-up of examination rooms and instruments in accordance with proper sterilization techniques established by hospital and infection control policies.
  • Maintain logging systems as required for refrigeration of medications, point-of-care testing, sterilization processes, crash carts, or others as needed.
  • Check expiration dates on all medications and medical supplies and dispose of them appropriately according to institution policy.
  • Comply with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation, and other hazardous substances.
  • May perform appointment scheduling or the booking of surgeries/procedures, or work in conjunction with Surgical Coordinators verifying times with patients, preparing charts, pre-admissions, and consent forms.
  • May be required to perform proficient phlebotomy duties.
  • May check and verify and update insurance information utilizing internal or web sources. May perform and verify pre-certification for procedures as necessary.
  • Provides training and mentoring to Level I MA staff.
  • May assist in establishing Medical Assistant I and II schedules and workflow to meet the needs of the practice and applicable to patient volumes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Completion of a certificate Medical Assistant program from an accredited school
  • Completion of a Medical Scribe training program (if the Scribe role is required by the department)
  • 3+ years of experience as a Medical Assistant
