Job Summary

As a Registered Nurse Lactation Consultant at UT Southwestern Medical Center, you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive environment that prioritizes patient care and satisfaction. Our Mother/Baby and Women's Resources Center is a 14-bed unit that provides comprehensive care to antepartum patients, postpartum mothers, and well babies. We specialize in Mother Baby care, teaching baby care, breastfeeding, home care, and self-care. Our lactation consultants provide expert support to all patients, and our Women's Resources Center schedules follow-up visits for weight checks, jaundice, and lactation assistance.

Responsibilities
  • Perform and accurately document physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments, considering age-specific criteria.
  • Anticipate patient and/or patient's family needs and expectations, utilizing these in conjunction with assessments to develop an appropriate plan of care.
  • Identify and implement appropriate nursing interventions based on completed assessments, completing accurate and timely documentation.
  • Prioritize lactation nursing interventions based on completed assessments, promptly identifying changes in condition and reporting them.
  • Evaluate implemented interventions and modify care according to evaluation, documenting interventions and modifications in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Adhere to hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways, and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice.
  • Provide timely answers and/or education to patients, patient's families, significant others, and/or caregivers, completing accurate and timely documentation of all education provided.
  • Welcomes and orients patient, family, significant other, and/or caregiver to the unit, encouraging patient/family participation in care and reviewing personalized patient lactation plan of care with patient/family every shift.
  • Advocate for resources and support that enhance patient safety and unit/hospital-based initiatives, participating in evaluating data to guide decisions regarding unit/department budget formulation and implementation.
  • Perform Peer Evaluation to provide constructive feedback to peers regarding performance, holding co-workers accountable for their behavior and compliance with policies and standards.
  • Accountable for patient care and quality/safety initiatives, sharing professional and technical information with colleagues and students, and offering self as a resource as needed to others.
