Job Overview:

This is a remarkable opportunity to contribute to a pioneering dual language initiative. The Multilingual Educator will play a vital role in establishing the second dual language program within the Capital Region at Schenectady City School District (SCSD).

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

The Multilingual Educator will enhance the capacity for effective teaching that aids school leadership and staff in addressing the needs of our English Language Learners (ELL) and dual language students. This role involves developing and refining bilingual programming aimed at boosting Spanish language and literacy skills, as well as academic success for both Spanish-speaking ELLs and native English speakers. The educator will provide high-quality, innovative, and research-driven professional development and technical support to administrators, teachers, support staff, and community organizations.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal and the Assistant Director of ENL, World Languages, and Culturally Responsive Education (CRE) in the Office of Teaching and Learning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate closely with the District Department Chair of ENL, ENL/Bilingual Instructional Coach, teachers, and building administrators.
  • Work with educators to offer targeted strategies for enhancing instructional delivery for ELLs whose primary language is Spanish.
  • Coordinate with the ENL Department Chair and ENL Instructional Coach to deliver professional development that supports dual language and general education teachers, focusing on literacy development in a second language.
  • Assist in evaluating programming for the dual language initiative and contribute to budgeting for curriculum development, classroom materials, and resources.
  • Design a comprehensive curriculum and develop lesson plans that provide a balanced educational experience in Spanish language, culture, and literacy tailored to the diverse needs of students.
  • Regularly assess student progress and prepare progress reports.
  • Instruct students in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other essential elements of the curriculum in Spanish, as mandated by state law and district regulations.
  • Provide individualized, small group, and/or large group instruction as necessary to accommodate varying student abilities.
  • Establish and uphold standards of student behavior conducive to a productive learning environment.
  • Enhance professional competence through participation in district-provided in-service education and self-directed professional growth activities.
  • Supervise extracurricular activities for students during the assigned workday as required.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and pupil personnel staff regarding individual student progress and development.
  • Engage in committees and participate in student and family activities focused on ELL students.
  • Serve as a resource across departments to connect relevant aspects of subject areas.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with students and their families regarding academic and behavioral progress.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of ENL, World Languages, and CRE.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING:

  • Proven track record of assisting ELLs, particularly Spanish-speaking ELLs, in achieving academic success.
  • Thorough understanding of New York State Commissioner's Regulations Part 154 Transitional Bilingual Education Programming.
  • Experience in data analysis and utilizing results to adapt lessons.
  • Extensive experience with Dual Language instructional best practices.
  • Ability to effectively research, identify, and secure instructional materials and resources to enhance teaching quality across various subjects and grade levels.
  • Willingness to actively engage in school communities.
  • Unwavering integrity and commitment to the SCSD mission, with a readiness to serve the diverse SCSD community.
  • Openness to participating in professional development opportunities.
  • Significant experience in implementing effective instructional practices in Spanish Home Language Arts and Bilingual Content Area Subjects, designing engaging lessons, and utilizing data and formative assessments in the classroom.
  • Experience in fostering culturally responsive learning environments that celebrate student diversity.
  • Ability to model positive character traits and habits, such as organization, consistency, and understanding.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, understanding, and communicating in English and Spanish to fulfill the duties of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred teaching experience in New York State.
  • NYS Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 2) or Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) Certification required, along with NYS Bilingual Education Extension Certificate.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit; be adaptable, willing, and able to take on various roles at the school and district levels to meet the diverse needs of SCSD students.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and facilitation skills in both Spanish and English.
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected from any candidate for hire.
  • Training and/or experience with Culturally Relevant Education is preferred.
  • Bilingual Education experience in New York State is preferred.
