Job Title: VDC Systems Detailer

At Harper General Contractors, we are seeking a highly skilled VDC Systems Detailer to join our team. As a VDC Systems Detailer, you will play a critical role in developing detailed, constructible 3D models of mechanical systems using VDC software such as Revit and Navisworks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Model Coordination: Develop detailed, constructible 3D models of mechanical systems using VDC software such as Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with project teams to ensure mechanical designs are integrated seamlessly with other trades and comply with all project requirements.
  • Clash Detection and Resolution: Perform clash detection and resolution activities to identify and mitigate potential issues before construction begins.
  • Coordination Meetings: Participate in coordination meetings with project stakeholders to provide insights and updates on mechanical model development.
  • VDC Technologies: Leverage VDC technologies to simulate construction sequences, optimize designs, and enhance project planning and execution.
  • Industry Knowledge: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, tools, and practices in VDC and mechanical design.
  • Standards and Workflows: Contribute to the development and implementation of VDC standards and workflows within the mechanical discipline.
  • Project Management: Work on up to 3 detailing projects at any time.
  • Model Development: Develop models to help illustrate complex questions and solutions.
  • Team Support: Develop 3D model components for team.
  • General Support: Ability to provide general support to project & coordination teams on tools and processes.
Field Layout:
  • 2D Layout Plans: Generate 2D layout plans for underground field installation and QC with pointed stub-ups and tie in locations that include column lines, wall lines, or other critical components for field layout & QC.
  • 3D Models: Generated pointed 3D models for field layout & GQ.
  • Layout Updates: Update points/layout information for trades as needed throughout construction.
Reality Capture:
  • Drone Operation: Acquire part 107 drone license and learn the basics of commercial UAV operation on a construction Conducting mapping missions and project documentation with oversight.
  • Reality Capture Data: Develop a basic understanding and ability to operate drones, total stations, GPS, laser scanners and 360 cameras.
  • Coordination Models: Be proficient in using reality capture data with coordination models to verify existing conditions and/or conduct conflict resolution.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Entry Level/Project Engineer Responsibilities: Able to perform all essential Entry Level / Project Engineer responsibilities.
  • New Technologies: Research, understand, and communicate new technologies and workflows.
  • Training and Mentorship: Able to train and mentor Interns, and Co-ops.
Work Environment:

The VDC Systems Detailer role encompasses a hybrid work environment, combining office-based tasks focused on digital modeling and coordination with active participation in fieldwork on construction sites. In the office, their work involves extended periods of computer use and detailed data management, while on-site duties require physical mobility, adherence to safety protocols, and adaptability to varying outdoor conditions.

Physical Demands:
  1. Sedentary Work: Frequent sitting while working on computers or attending meetings. Ability to operate standard office equipment like computers, phones, and printers.
  2. Visual Acuity: Extensive use of computer screens requiring close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  3. Manual Dexterity: Frequent use of keyboard, mouse, and other computer components.
  4. Mental Focus: Ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods.
  1. Mobility and Physical Activity: Regular on-site visits requiring walking, standing, and navigating uneven terrain. Occasional climbing of ladders or navigating through scaffolding when accessing different parts of the construction site.
  2. Lifting and Carrying: Ability to occasionally lift or move equipment or materials up to 30 pounds.
  3. Environmental Exposure: Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, and potentially loud noises. Necessary use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.
  4. Fine Motor Skills and Precision: Handling and operating equipment for field layout, such as robotic total stations or laser scanners.
  5. Spatial Awareness and Coordination: Ability to navigate and work safely within an active construction environment. Good hand-eye coordination for precise measurements and field layout activities.
  6. Visual and Auditory Acuity: Ability to visually inspect construction sites and models. Need to hear and be aware of surrounding activities and hazards in a construction environment.
General Requirements:
  1. Adaptability: Ability to switch between office and field environments, adapting to different physical demands as needed.
  2. Travel Requirements: Willingness and ability to travel to different construction sites as required.
  3. Safety Compliance: Adherence to safety protocols and company guidelines in both office and field settings.
Education and Experience:
  • Education: Educational Background: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Experience: Experience in BIM Modeling or Coordination: 2+ years of experience in mechanical design or detailing, with a strong focus on VDC/BIM technologies.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in relevant software such as Revit, Navisworks, and Civil 3D is essential.
  • Communication Skills: Strong communication skills are necessary for effective collaboration with project teams and other stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Ability to independently identify and resolve issues that arise during the coordination process.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to work in both office and field environments, adapting to the demands of each setting.
