QUALIFICATIONS

  • In lieu of certification/registration, nursing students currently enrolled in a Connecticut nursing program who have completed 100 hours of theoretical and clinical training in fundamental nursing skills are eligible. Certification and registration must be obtained within 120 days of employment.
JOB SUMMARY

  • The certified nursing assistant operates as a caregiver within a team, assisting in the care of a designated group of patients under the guidance and supervision of a licensed nurse.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This role necessitates prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and forward reaching, with occasional sitting. Ability to safely transfer patients and provide hands-on assistance is essential. The position requires the capability to lift or carry objects up to 10 pounds continuously, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 40 pounds for patient transfers and mobility. Ability to push/pull up to 50 pounds regularly throughout the day for patient transport and mobility activities is also required. Occasional overhead reaching, crawling, kneeling, and squatting may be necessary in relation to patient care. Visual and auditory skills are essential, along with fine motor skills for writing and computer tasks.
COGNITIVE DEMANDS

  • This position requires the application of previously acquired knowledge and the ability to adapt to new situations. Organizational skills, reasoning, and flexibility of thought are crucial.
  • Basic formulation, content, syntax, and spelling skills are necessary for task completion. Simple sentence or very short paragraph expression is sufficient.
  • Effective communication skills, including spontaneous dialogue and paraphrasing, are required to engage with diverse populations.
  • The ability to comprehend lengthy messages or paragraphs and follow multi-step instructions is essential. Strong listening and feedback skills are necessary.
  • Basic arithmetic skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of tens and hundreds, are required. Familiarity with measuring units such as milliliters, liters, centimeters, feet, yards, and pounds is also necessary.
WORK DEMANDS

  • This role primarily involves indoor work, with occasional outdoor tasks. Continuous interaction with others is required. Schedule fluctuations may occur based on unit and patient needs, and work hours may change accordingly.
  • Exposure to bloodborne and/or airborne pathogens, body fluids, infections, and contagious diseases is possible. The ability to respond to medical and/or behavioral emergencies is also necessary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide care under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse, adhering to hospital policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Receive reports from licensed nurses regarding assigned patients.
  • Communicate relevant patient information to appropriate team members.
  • Incorporate awareness of age, developmental, cultural, hearing, and other special patient needs into the care provided.
  • Assist professional staff during emergency situations as needed.
  • Demonstrate competency in the use of patient-related equipment.
  • Document care in a timely and accurate manner, following hospital policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff meetings and complete assigned tasks efficiently.
  • Assist in maintaining orderliness, cleanliness, and supply management within the unit.
  • Support equipment maintenance and report any technical issues to the manager or PCC.
  • Transport specimens to the laboratory as required.
