Nursing Assistant Day Shift: Oncology and General Surgery

Schedule and Licensure

This part-time Nursing Assistant role is available on the day shift, with scheduled hours from 6:30 am to 7:00 pm, including rotating weekends and holidays. To be eligible for this position, you must have weekday availability and be in good standing with the State Registry in which you practice.

Education and Certification

We are seeking a Nursing Assistant with a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED), or a High School Graduate who is currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Nursing. Additionally, you must hold Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assist RNs with daily patient care, including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, activity orders, and ambulation, which may involve the use of therapeutic assistive devices, proper positioning, range of motion, and special transferring as indicated.
  2. Measure and document patient data, including blood pressures, TPRs (Temperature, Pulse, Respiration), I & O (Intake and Output), daily weights, and other requested information.
  3. Document accurately in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  4. Perform purposeful rounding under the direction of RNs and promptly communicate observations, concerns, and needs of patients/families to RNs.
  5. Participate in admission, transfer, and discharge processes under supervision of RNs, including room setup, orientation to room, removing linen, and proper management of patient belongings.
  6. Ensure patient call lights are always within reach and respond promptly to call-lights.
  7. Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens and perform point-of-care testing as indicated, using approved processes for accurate specimen labeling and identification.
  8. Maintain competency as required.
  9. Complete various errands as directed, including pick-up and delivery of trays, charts, specimens, and reports.
  10. Maintain and order stock for the nursing area.
  11. Clean equipment and work areas.
  12. Perform patient positioning and transporting duties that require lifting and pushing/pulling while utilizing proper technique and assistive devices.
  13. Perform tasks related to nutritional needs of patients under the direction of RNs, including diet review, tray setup/removal, proper positioning, and diet selection.
  14. Perform tasks related to maintaining skin integrity, including proper repositioning and skin care.
  15. Ensure special patient supplies and appliances are provided and maintained, such as TED hose and sequential compression devices.
  16. Under the direction of RNs and as determined by site/unit requirements, may be required to remove IVs, provide post-mortem care, and perform bladder scans.
  17. Practice within policies and procedures of infection prevention by demonstrating hand hygiene and knowledge of sterile and aseptic procedures, proper disposal of contaminated materials, and utilizing proper attire when in direct contact with patients in isolation.
  18. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  19. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

We are seeking a Nursing Assistant with the following qualifications:

  1. Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Nursing with planned completion of the program in 6 or more months.
  2. Basic computer skills.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication.
  4. Excellent organizational skills and ability to set priorities.
  5. Certification Addendum: Team members will maintain annual educational requirements for hospital-based certifications (e.g. DNV, CARF or others).
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

This role requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders during the work shift. Additionally, you must be able to:

  1. Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
  2. Lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
  3. Carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.

You will also be required to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force, perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present, and use foot pedals on carts or machines. You must have functional vision and hearing, and be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards as well as blood and body fluids on a continuous basis, requiring the use of protective clothing as necessary.
