Job Summary

Responsible for assembling, connecting, and constructing pipe systems for storm or sanitation sewers, fire, water mains. Ensures ground is prepped and trenches dug out for pipes. Aligns pipes and seals joints together with cement or gasket joint materials.

Key Responsibilities
  • Installs or uses instruments such as lasers, grade rods, or transit levels.
  • Cuts pipes to required lengths.
  • Connects pipe pieces and seals joints.
  • Covers pipes with earth or other materials.
  • Installs or repairs sanitary or stormwater sewer structures or pipe systems.
  • Aligns and positions pipes for new installation or repair.
  • Checks slopes for conformance to requirements, using levels or lasers.
  • Lays out pipe routes, following written instructions or blueprints and coordinating layouts with supervisors.
  • Operates equipment, such as rollers, loaders, excavators, plate compactors and jumping jacks.
  • Grades or levels trench vases, using tamping machines or hand tools.
  • Digs trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools.
  • Taps and frills holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary lines or devices.
  • Locates existing pipes needing repair or replacement, using magnetic or radio indicators.
  • Trains others in laying pipe.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum 1-year related experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Exhibit a high level of safety consciousness and a clear understanding of equipment safety.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints/plans and construct accordingly.
  • Valid Driver license.
  • OSHA 30 preferred (but not required).
  • Ability to set up & use effectively, site level, grade laser, pipe laser and straight-line level.
Work Environment

The work environment exposes periodically to employees high levels of noise, grease and dust typically associated with a construction project. The employee works regularly near heavy equipment and moving machinery. The work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as oil, grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, and tack.
