Job Title: Technical Director Genetics Lab

The Detroit Medical Center is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Director for its Genetics Laboratory. As a key member of the laboratory team, the Technical Director will be responsible for the overall direction and management of the laboratory's technical operations, including pre-and post-analytical functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement technical policies, systems, and procedures for the Genetics Laboratory.
  • Provide recommendations and input to policies, procedures, and systems for other DMC laboratory functions.
  • Cooperate with Site Medical and Administrative Directors to provide technical assistance for diagnostic testing performed within the Genetics Laboratory.
  • Establish and monitor all technical methods, processes, and procedures.
  • Ensure validity, accuracy, and analysis of all tests performed within the Genetics Laboratory.
  • Participate in proficiency surveys to evaluate the Genetics Laboratory's performance.
  • Conduct and direct continuing assessment of test procedures.
  • Direct technical training programs for employees, new employees, medical technology students, medical students, and/or residents.
  • Maintain liaison with physicians and support staff, such as genetic counselors, nurses, nurse practitioners, and dietitians within the Children's Hospital of Michigan Metabolic Clinic and pathologists.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with educational institutions, professional organizations, government agencies, etc. to keep abreast of changes, developments, and regulations related to clinical test procedures for diagnosis of illness and disease.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Life Science relevant to Biochemical Genetics, e.g., Biochemistry, Genetics, etc.
  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory, including administrative and managerial experience in technical activities to develop familiarity with laboratory technical activities and procedures involving Medical Genetics.
  • Board certification or Active Candidacy by the American Board of Medical Genetics in Clinical Biochemical Genetics, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Cytogenetic, or Clinical Molecular Genetics.
