Job Summary

As a CDL A Truck Driver at Harris Teeter, you will be responsible for safely driving a tractor trailer truck to transport groceries and related materials to and from specified destinations. This role requires a high level of attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Verify Load and Inspect Vehicle: Verify the load and inspect the tractor and trailer prior to departure from the distribution center, ensuring compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
  • Drive Safely: Drive the truck to the destination, applying knowledge of commercial driving regulations and roads in the area.
  • Verify Load at Destination: Verify the load against the load sheet and trip sheet documents at the specified destination, checking pallet count and obtaining a receipt signature from the store.
  • Communicate with Supervisor: Maintain telephone contact with the supervisor to receive delivery instructions and inform the supervisor of any mechanical problems or delays at the stores or on the road.
  • Perform Emergency Repairs: Perform emergency roadside repairs, such as installing light bulbs and fuses.
  • Inform Supervisor of Returned Merchandise: Inform the supervisor on duty of any returned merchandise from stores.
  • Refuel Vehicles: Refuel all tractors and Thermo-King units when directed to do so.
  • Maintain Driver Log: Maintain a driver log and abide by all D.O.T. regulations.
  • Load or Unload Truck: Load or unload the truck or work in the warehouse as needed.
  • Follow Company Policies: Follow the company's attendance policy by coming to work on time and when scheduled, and follow the company's safety policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED), CDL license, and a minimum of three years related driving experience or comparable related transportation experience with Harris Teeter.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other associates of the organization.
  • Math Ability: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and vibration. The associate is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
