Operating Room Surgical Aide Position at Mass General Brigham

About the Role:
This role plays a vital part in maintaining a safe environment for quality patient care in the Operating Room. As an integral member of the healthcare team, you will work under the direct supervision of registered professional nurses, Pod Leaders, and Operating Room Charge Nurses.
Your responsibilities will include transporting patients to and from the Operating Room and other locations, assisting nursing staff with patient care, positioning and transferring anesthetized patients, and supporting limbs during surgical skin prep.
You will also be responsible for performing shave preps on surgical patients, delivering specimens and blood products to the Laboratory or Radiology as directed, and maintaining order and cleanliness in the CSR2 Soiled area.
Additionally, you will prioritize patient care tasks, communicate effectively with the healthcare team, and maintain confidentiality of patient information.
Key Responsibilities:
- Understand and practice Isolation/Precautions in patient care.
- Maintain inventory levels of specified stock items within the Operating Room according to established guidelines.
- Assist nursing staff in the rooms as needed and directed (i.e., turning, moving anesthetized patients, holding extremities for surgical prep, gathering equipment, etc.).
- Perform between-case cleaning to minimize turnaround between surgical procedures.
- Check the status of stretchers to ensure they are ready and available when needed for patient transport.
- Clean according to established policy and procedure.
- Responsible for performing the Balancing of the Total Care Bed for specific patient populations prior to patient use.
- Check the status of oxygen tanks on stretchers to assure O2 is always available for patient transport.
- Maintain inventory of medical gases for patient care (oxygen, laser mixture, nitrogen, compressed air).
- Delivery of specimens and blood products to the Laboratory or Radiology, as directed by nursing personnel.
- Clean Operating Room equipment at the end of surgical procedures, including surgical tables, mayo stands, ring stands, instrument tables, kick buckets, and IV poles, according to established infection control policies and procedures.
- Run errands as needed and directed by registered professional nurses and/or charge nurses, understanding the importance of efficiency in performing tasks.
- Collaborate with other members of the surgical team to see that each Operating Room is clean and all equipment is in place.
- Perform shave prep on surgical patients as directed, according to established guidelines, policy, and procedure.
- Determine specific waste type (hazardous vs. regular) for proper disposal of OR trash.
- Maintain order and cleanliness in the CSR2 Soiled room where linen, trash, and infectious waste are stored prior to disposal via CSR/Environmental Services.
- Communicate pertinent information regarding patient care concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Responsible for applying the principles of asepsis to maintain integrity of the sterile field.
- Assist and collaborate with the Circulating nurse and Surgical Technologist to set up for surgical procedures with proper instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.
- Assist in the care, cleaning, and maintenance of all general and specialty instruments, equipment, and supplies according to established guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of information related to individual patients and patient care units.
